Elle Bulgaria Water Editorial

Elle Bulgaria Water Editorial 2016 - Lindsay Adler Photography

I'm thrilled to share images from my most recent editorial that appeared in Elle Bulgaria this month!

For this shoot I wanted to create an elegant water themed beauty editorial that would focus on dewy skin with both rich and golden tones of makeup and rich blue tones in the background.

To get the water effect I set up a kiddy pool in the studio and lined the bottom with textured and reflective plastic board to create unusual patterns beneath the water's surface.

At times I kept the water still, focusing on capturing beautiful reflections off of the model's face, other times I had assistants splash the water to create movement and energy to the shots.

I loved the teal and blue tones of the water (created by the plastic colored surface below), and I wanted to play up these saturated tones. For this reason I added a blue gel and teal gel to the scene creating a colored rim light on my subject's face and giving blue undertones to the shadows.

One of the challenges of the shoot was achieving flattering angles for my subject's face. When a person lays directly on their back, often there is distortion and unpleasing results to the skin. Furthermore, when the subject was posed to the side, I had to balance how submerged her face would be and how much of the background I would include. I wanted to keep the shots clean, elegant, and focused on the gorgeous textures of her skin, hair draped across her face, and dewy drops of water clinging on her skin.

I worked a variety of angles and absolutely loved the professionalism of my model, Puck. Though the water often become cold and I'd ask her to submerge part of her face underwater for extended periods of time, she stayed focused and professional.

In the end, the results were exactly what I was looking for in this summer beauty editorial! The model's skin was absolutely glowing thanks to the talents of makeup artist Griselle Rosario, the beauty of my subject, and carefully placed lighting.

I LOVE the shots and am excited to finally be able to share them with you here! For this shoot I invited students from New York Film Academy to watch the creative process behind the scenes so they could see an editorial come to life.

    • WOWOOW! What an awesome honor. I absolutely love my job, and I love to share the passion I have with others. I love the line between “art” and “commerce” and how I can use visual story-telling to help a brand achieve its goals. Its a pretty fun exercise to test my abilities. Thanks for including me — I’m truly honored!
